Denham Green Place

House Alterations, Edinburgh

A new open-plan kitchen, dining and garden room has transformed how this Trinity home works for a young family, creating brighter spaces and a stronger connection to the garden.

The design brought the kitchen, dining room and rear annex together into one light-filled space with clear views to both courtyard and garden. The garden room featured large aluminium-clad timber windows and doors that flooded the space with natural light. External walls were finished with cork-based insulating plaster, a natural material that improved comfort year-round. A new door from the dining area opened straight to the courtyard, creating an easy flow between indoors and out.

The house sits at the end of a terrace, close to the corner of a densely built urban block. The garden wraps around in an unusual way, with the kitchen and dining room previously looking onto a small courtyard and cut off from the main garden

The kitchen used Ikea units with custom-made fronts, achieving a high-end look without the cost of a bespoke fit-out. Upstairs, the shower room was reconfigured to create a brighter, better-planned space. An awkward cupboard on the ground floor was reworked to provide a compact wc and utility room, adding useful facilities without taking up valuable space.
