Cluny Gardens Extension

Transforming a family home in Edinburgh

This two-storey extension to a family home in Edinburgh, creates a bright, spacious living area with a strong connection to the garden – and plenty of room for a growing family.

The clients reached out soon after purchasing this Morningside property, eager to create more space and improve the home’s relationship with the outside. A small existing extension and a significant level change meant that the inside was disconnected from the garden.

Our key move was to lower the floor level of the new dining and living area towards the garden to form a direct connection to a new terrace. The result is a generous, open-plan split-level space where the family can cook, eat and spend time together – with direct access to the terrace and views to the trees beyond.

Externally, the extension is finished in textured white roughcast render, giving it a clean, robust appearance that complements the original house. A brick basecourse provides a solid base to the extension and aligns with the floor level of the existing house, linking the garden naturally back to the interior.

The asymmetrical roof responds to the geometry of the original house, creating a bold yet harmonious form that feels both distinctive and connected.

Large doors and windows flood the new family space with natural light and provide long views to the trees beyond. The painted steel and timber in the roof add warmth and texture, whilst triple-glazed doors and windows give a robust, high-quality finish.
